Today gave me the opportunity to reacquaint myself with personal narrative writing, something which I usually spend very little time developing. Though I was familiar with many of the techniques used today, I still benefited from the experience. I had done the "My Name, Community, or Gift" exercise before, but still challenged myself to explore a different aspect this time.
I regularly use "snapshots" and "thought shots" in my writing, and I teach my students to do the same. I find that these techniques help students use sensory details to expand the richness of their experience and make it much more interesting to the reader.
The new approach to writers' conferencing was very helpful, and I can see myself using it with my students. Finding three pieces of information and one question was an effective approach that will help students concentrate and stay on task.
I look forward to learning new techniques throughout the next few weeks. Mahalo!
